Steve Mowry is the Bellator 290 fighter to watch
By Chad Porto
Fans should watch Steve Mowry at Bellator 290
Bellator 290 will not only be a night of firsts for the company but a night of finales for some stepping into the Bellator cage for the last time. The promotion will be debuting on CBS for the first time ever and will feature a main event that will prove to be the last fight for the Last Emperor, Fedor Emelianenko. It’s a night of monumental importance, a night that has added pressure to the proceedings for all those involved. Meaning that someone like Steve Mowry has a prime opportunity to elevate his stock.
The card has a host of names that need a big outing, like Neiman Gracie, who is 2-4 in his last six, Alejandra Lara, who is 2-5 in her last seven, and Darrion Caldwell, who is 2-5 in his last seven. All three are looking to raise their profiles. Then you have Karl Albrektsson, who was seen as an equal to the likes of Jiri Prochazka, Valentin Moldavsky, and Vadim Nemkov when the quartet was running in Rizin FC together. But he needs to prove he can win against Bellator’s top competition.
Not Mowry, however. He’s on the come-up, and he’s heading straight to an eventual showdown with the heavyweight champion should he keep up his winning ways.
Steve Mowry has a former heavyweight champion to contend with at Bellator 290
Mowry was already given a shot against former title challenger Moldavsky, but an errant eye poke ended that fight. Now, he’s got a former heavyweight champion to contend with in his quest to stay undefeated. At Bellator 290, Mowry has to fend off the former PFL heavyweight champion, Ali Isaev. Isaev won the 2019 heavyweight season to earn the distinction, going 4-0 in the process. He’s only had nine fights however and hasn’t fought in over three years.
And at 39, he’s not exactly the future of the division. Still, for Mowry, this could be a huge test. This is a man who won a season-long tournament to be crowned a champion and a million-dollar winner.
Mowry is a big fighter at 6’8 and carries a lot of weight, so he’ll have to be dutiful with how much energy he puts out against the former freestyle wrestling champion. Mowry’s volume striking and more regular competition schedule should give him a slight edge over Isaev, and if that ends up being the case, Mowry could easily take the first step into serious title contention.
