Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora played his own role in the Astros 2017 sign-stealing scandal, and he’s reportedly spoken on the events since then.

The Houston Astros cheated their way to the 2017 World Series. That much is clear.

Houston used an illegal sign-stealing system, headlined by recording the opposing team’s signs with a camera in centerfield and using a garbage can to relay them. In some ways, it was incredible complex. In others, annoyingly simple.

But Cora played his role in the events, and spent a year out of baseball as a result. The Red Sox rehired Cora prior to the 2020 regular season.

In a new report from the Boston Herald, Cora allegedly boasted about the sign-stealing scandal, reportedly saying that he and the Astros “stole that f——-g World Series” repeatedly.

What was Alex Cora’s role in Astros sign-stealing scandal?

Per the New York Times, Cora played an instrumental role in relaying the opposing team’s signs to the hitter, which is why he ultimately took a year-long break from the game itself:

"“Cora was the most culpable actor in the scheme to steal opposing catchers’ signs via a video feed and communicate them to the Astros’ hitters, coordinating the effort with several players starting early in the 2017 season, according to M.L.B.’s report. Beltran was the only Astros player named in the report, and M.L.B.,” David Waldstein of the New York Times wrote."

Given Cora’s heavy involvement in the scheme, the details of his comments to fellow Red Sox employees will be frowned upon.

Will Red Sox discipline Alex Cora any further?

For now, neither the Red Sox nor Cora have said anything as to the report. While Cora’s comments are deplorable, he has already paid his debt, in theory, by taking a year off as Red Sox manager. It would be surprising for them or MLB to levy any further punishment.

Cora’s reputation, however, has taken a major hit it may never recover from outside of Boston.
