More likely Derek Carr rumors outcome: Released and signs with a mystery team

The Raiders don’t have a ton of money. In fact, that’s at least part of the reason behind why they didn’t fire Josh McDaniels after the disaster of a season the team had in 2022. So, it would make sense for the Raiders to make the financially prudent decision when it comes to Carr.

If he is still on the team past mid-February, his cap hit increases considerably. He also just recently said he has no intention of extending that deadline to help the Raiders trade him.

That means, if they want to avoid that cap hit, they need to move fast, and they’ll likely need to release him. Teams will want to call their bluff if they say they’re going to hold him and hope to trade him.

For that reason, expect the most likely outcome to be Carr being released by Vegas, and picked up by a new team in free agency. The Colts make the most sense as far as cap space goes, but they have a pick where they could draft a quarterback. Instead, maybe it’ll be the Commanders, Buccaneers, Panthers, or the aforementioned Jets who sign him.
