3 Georgia football recruits who will have an immediate impact in 2023
By John Buhler
Stacy Searels will not want to keep five-star tackle Monroe Freeling on the bench
Though key players in the trenches such as Sedrick Van Pran-Granger and Tate Ratledge do return, Georgia will have to replace Broderick Jones, Warren Ericson and Warren McClendon up front. One player who enrolled early with five-star prospects coming out is offensive tackle Monroe Freeling. He is the No. 1 player from South Carolina, the No. 5 tackle prospect and No. 32 overall in his class.
At 6-foot-6 and 294 pounds, you are not going to see offensive line coach Stacy Searels let that big frame post up on the bench throughout his true freshman season. Georgia has a knack of getting its talented underclassmen rotational reps along the offensive line. Freeling is not going to start right away, but he can take someone’s job by the end of fall camp or during the 2023 season.
Look for Freeling to compete for the swing tackle role up front along the Georgia offensive line.
Damon Wilson will help fill Georgia’s biggest hole defensively from the get-go
Picking holes in Georgia’s defense is easier said than done. While some may argue the back-end could be its weakness, we know the secondary is the position group Smart and co-defensive coordinator Will Muschamp specialize in. However, if Georgia can get a more consistent pass-rush, there will be no stopping this defense. This is why five-star Damon Wilson is primed to break out.
Wilson is 6-foot-3.5 and 225 pounds. He hails from Venice, Florida and is Georgia’s top recruit in the cycle. The No. 3 edge rusher in the country is the No. 4 prospect from his home state and came in at No. 20 overall in his class. While Wilson may not be slated to start right away for Georgia, you better believe Smart will figure out a way to get this five-star early enrollee some snaps this year.
Putting Wilson in advantageous situations to succeed will bring out the best in this 2023 defense.
