Jalen Hurts will be starting in Super Bowl 57 for the Philadelphia Eagles. When was the last former Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback to win a Super Bowl?

With the Philadelphia Eagles winning the NFC, that means former Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Jalen Hurts will be starting in Super Bowl 57.

Hurts may have split collegiate allegiances between Alabama and Oklahoma, but the Crimson Tide faithful have every reason to claim him as one of their own. He played his first three college seasons in Tuscaloosa before transferring. While he does not get drafted in the second round without his one year working with Lincoln Riley in Norman, Hurts was built by Bama long before.

With Hurts one win away from hoisting the Lombardi Trophy, who is the last Alabama quarterback to win a Super Bowl anyhow?

Last Alabama QB to win a Super Bowl

The last Crimson Tide quarterback to win a Super Bowl was none other than “The Snake” himself, Ken Stabler. It took way too long for him to earn his rightful spot in Canton, but Stabler goes down as the greatest quarterback in the history of the Silver and Black. Stabler led the then-Oakland Raiders to their first Super Bowl win in 1976. They beat the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl 11.

Stabler spent his first 12 seasons as the starting quarterback with the Raiders from 1968 to 1979.

Last Alabama QB to start a Super Bowl

Fate would have it, Stabler is the last former Crimson Tide standout to start a Super Bowl under center. While he was the third former Alabama quarterback to win a Super Bowl, joining Bart Starr and Joe Namath who combined to win the first three Super Bowls with the Green Bay Packers and the New York Jets, respectively, we are approaching 50 seasons since the last Alabama champion.

A lot of this has to do with the Crimson Tide not really being a place where top quarterbacks get drafted. Although this is changing with Hurts, Mac Jones, Tua Tagovailoa and Bryce Young, the best former Crimson Tide quarterback of note between Stabler and Hurts was Richard Todd. He was the one who replaced Namath in New York. Todd did have success, but not to Namath’s degree.

The other big factor contributing to this great gap between Stabler and Hurts is this. More often than not, star NFL quarterbacks tend to hail from not traditional powers. You are more likely to see guys start in Super Bowls hailing from Cal and Stanford than you are from college football blue-bloods like Ohio State and USC. Playing with the best in college largely covers up inefficiencies.

Patrick Mahomes is from Texas Tech, but the last two Super Bowls had Alabama, Georgia and LSU stars.
