Eagles Super Bowl wins: Would win vs. Chiefs top Nick Foles’ run?
By John Buhler
Jalen Hurts could be the first Philadelphia Eagles quarterback to win a Super Bowl since Nick Foles.
All that stands in the way of Jalen Hurts becoming a Super Bowl-winning quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles are the Kansas City Chiefs.
Hurts did a ton of winning at college split between Alabama and Oklahoma, but this is the Super Bowl! Philadelphia may be a proud NFL franchise, but the Eagles only won their first Super Bowl five seasons ago with a journeyman backup in Nick Foles. He executed The Philly Special to perfection for Doug Pederson over the New England Patriots. Both are gone, but a statue remains.
Should Hurts, Nick Sirianni and the rest of the Eagles beat Kansas City, how would this stack up?
Philadelphia Eagles: Will a Jalen Hurts Super Bowl top Nick Foles’ Philly Special?
This is a tough question to answer because we need to know the outcome of Super Bowl 57 first. If the Eagles have their way with the Chiefs, it would go a long way towards topping Philadelphia’s Super Bowl 52 victory over New England. Though both Eagles teams in discussion were No. 1 seeds, the storyline surrounding Foles and those underdogs will be incredibly tough to overcome.
That particular Philadelphia team got the best 12-game stretch out of Carson Wentz imaginable. He played at an MVP level before succumbing to a season-ending injury down the stretch. Foles took over for him, caught fire and the rest is history. Philadelphia eked out a tough one at home over the Atlanta Falcons, and then clobbered the Minnesota Vikings to win the NFC that season.
Eagles Super Bowl wins
Foles outplayed Tom Brady in Super Bowl 52. A strip sack of Brady in the end lifted the Birds past the Patriots. It was one of the most incredible runs to Super Bowl glory we have ever seen, but unfortunately, it was not replicable. Things got super awkward in the building between Wentz and the rest of the team. Pederson was ousted three years later. The Eagles were supposed to rebuild.
So many people panned the Sirianni hire, including yours truly. He may have been awful at the podium, but his blue-collar ethos jived perfectly with Philly. His team quickly established a strong, ground-centric offensive identity around Hurts. The Eagles were a shocking playoff team a year ago, but emerged as the team to beat the NFC this season. They have been consistently dominant.
After getting the first-round bye, the Eagles cleaned the rival New York Giants’ clock before embarrassing an injury-plagued San Francisco 49ers team. Even if they only beat the Chiefs by a single point in The Valley of the Sun, that road to Super Bowl glory might be more impressive. However, the sentimental value of the Eagles getting their first ever with Foles cannot be topped.
What is important to understand in the context of Super Bowl 57 is if the Eagles win, this may not be a one-off. Hurts will get paid handsomely and Sirianni will begin to build his legacy worth eventual Canton enshrinement. This is not about winning the Lombardi Trophy every year from here on out, but becoming an NFC playoff fixture. The road to the Super Bowl runs through Philly.
Hurts’ first Super Bowl would not top Foles’ one and only, but this feels sustainable for the Birds.
