Duke head coach Jon Scheyer got his start as a player for the Blue Devils under Coach K, so he knows the rivalry with UNC up close and personal.

North Carolina and Duke have faced off more than 250 times. Blue Devils head coach Jon Scheyer played in eight of them.

It’s been over a decade since Scheyer suited up for Duke as a player. After giving up his international playing career, the point guard went into coaching with a meteoric rise to take over the program after Coach K’s retirement.

Now, he’s on the coaching side of what he calls, “the greatest rivalry in sport.”

How did he do as a player against the Tar Heels?

Scheyer was 3-5 for Duke against UNC as a player, going 2-3 as a starter. He lost his first two games against them in 2007, and five of his first six in the rivalry, then swept the Blue Devils in 2010 as a senior.

Here are his game logs from those appearances (*started):

  • *Feb. 2, 2007 (L, 73-79): 8-18, 26 points, 1 rebound, 0 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 2 turnovers

Scheyer’s career-high for points against UNC came in his very first taste of the rivalry. He had 26 points as a freshman while tasting defeat.

His two performances in 2010 were memorable with more than 20 points in each emphatic victory. The final outing of Scheyer’s career against the Tar Heels, an 82-50 drubbing, signaled what was to come in the NCAA Tournament as Duke won the national championship.
