1. Terrell Edmunds

Edmunds is by far the toughest call on this list for the team’s front office. They invested a first-round pick in his services during the 2018 draft. He was a solid, but unspectacular starter alongside Minkah Fitzpatrick at safety this season.

Throw in the reality that Edmunds is still just 26 years old and it’s easy to see why Pittsburgh might be tempted to spend a sizeable chunk of cap space to keep him. Spending a lot of money on a second safety would represent poor roster construction by GM Omar Khan.

The lack of premium associated with the safety position is why Pittsburgh needs to let Edmunds sign a big deal somewhere else. They can find a player capable of giving them 80% of Edmunds’ production for half the price in free agency. The player they sign to replace him likely won’t have the gravitas associated with a former first-rounder, but they could easily end up being a more productive player.

Pittsburgh could look to the draft for an Edmunds replacement but their resources would be better utilized in free agency. Stealing someone like Julian Love away from the Giants could provide Tomlin’s defense a major boost. Even if the Steelers don’t spend big they should be able to find an adequate starter on the open market.
