Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes won his second league MVP on Thursday night, which puts him in exclusive company. It likely won’t be his last.

Patrick Mahomes led the NFL this season in passing yards (5,250), touchdown passes (41) and Total QBR (77.5), all the while leading Kansas City to a 14-3 regular season record and, eventually, a Super Bowl appearance all while standing on one leg.

It’s a performance that will go down in history as one of football’s gutsiest — namely his game against the Cincinnati Bengals and Joe Burrow at Arrowhead, where he and his Chiefs teammates used Eli Apple’s trash talk against him.

At NFL Honors, Mahomes himself was immortalized again as league MVP. His wife, Brittany Mahomes, retweeted several of the team tributes, and even tweeted out a simple message herself.

As for his teammates and the fans, Mahomes had plenty of support thanks to a team-sponsored video featuring Travis Kelce, Paul Rudd and more.

Chiefs, Patrick Mahomes look to reverse history

In recent years, winning league MVP has not been conducive to taking home the ultimate team award in the Lombardi Trophy. Some recent examples of this are Kurt Warner in 2001, Rich Gannon in 2002, Shaun Alexander in 2005, Tom Brady in 2007, Peyton Manning in 2009 and 2013, Cam Newton in 2015, Matt Ryan in 2016, and Tom Brady in 2017.

Mahomes and KC face a daunting challenge of their own in the Philadelphia Eagles. Philly has one of the best pass defenses in all of football, and an explosive offense to match. Jalen Hurts, A.J. Brown, Miles Sanders and DeVonta Smith are just a few of the core players who make up this bunch. They are all young, and Nick Sirianni is in just his second year as head coach. But if anything that may be a benefit — they’re too inexperienced to give a damn.

If Mahomes reverses recent history, then perhaps that’ll be his greatest accomplishment of all.
