Andy Reid’s conservative approach immediately backfires in hilarious fashion

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid opted to go for a field goal, and it backfired tremendously in the first quarter of Super Bowl 57.

Super Bowl 57 features two of the most electric offenses in the NFL in the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles. That was evident after each team scored a touchdown on their opening drives of the big game on Sunday. Given how it was going, both teams would have to score nearly every drive.

After forcing the Eagles to punt, the Chiefs faced a fourth-and-three six plays later. Instead of going for the first down, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid instead decided to go for the short field goal. That move turned out to backfire, as Harrison Butker’s kick hit the left upright, resulting in no points being scored by Kansas City.

There’s no worse sound for a fan than hearing a loud “DOINK” after their favorite team attempts a field goal. There was way this decision could get any worse for the Chiefs, right? Right?

On the ensuing drive, the Eagles were awarded a first-down on third-and-four after Chiefs defensive end Frank Clark was called for offsides. Three plays later, quarterback Jalen Hurts unleashed a deep pass to the end zone, which was tracked down and caught by wide receiver A.J. Brown for the 42-yard, go-ahead touchdown reception.

With that, the Eagles took an early 14-7 lead in the Super Bowl.

Just when Reid was about to be eviscerated for that call, the Chiefs were able to take the momentum away from the Eagles. On Philadelphia’s next drive, Hurts rolled out of the pocket to the right sideline, but fumble the football. There were all Chiefs nearby, and linebacker Nick Bolton recovered it and returned it 36-yards for a touchdown. The game was tied.

And just like that, we have a football game, criticism to Reid be damned.
