MLB spring training: 1 bold prediction for every NL East team
MLB predictions: New York Mets
The age of Mets’ rotation becomes a factor.
The Mets had a busy offseason and spent money unlike any team in baseball history. But it wasn’t all positive. They lost Jacob deGrom, their superstar right-handed pitcher, to the Texas Rangers in a deal that sent shockwaves throughout the industry.
But they successfully replaced him and are in a strong position to overcome his departure, adding Justin Verlander on a two-year contract with the highest average annual value in baseball history. Just look at their rotation entering spring training:
Justin Verlander: 40.
Max Scherzer: 39 on July 27th.
Kodai Senga: 30.
Jose Quintana: 34.
Carlos Carrasco: 36.
There could be issues that arise, of course, considering the overall age of the rotation (none of the five starters are under 30) and the youngest starter, Senga, had issues with his “iffy” physical after agreeing to a five-year, $75 million contract with the Mets, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post.
The Mets are the co-favorites to win the National League East, especially with Steve Cohen’s massive payroll. The overall talent of the rotation is a big reason why and they accomplished what seemed like the impossible task of replacing deGrom, though the health of the unit will be something to monitor all season.
