Shohei Ohtani rumors: 3 teams already licking their chops for free agency, No. 1: San Francisco Giants
The San Francisco Giants were the team to watch this offseason, as they posed themselves as the biggest threat to the New York Yankees. That is because they were making a push to sign superstar outfielder and 2022 AL MVP Aaron Judge. It seemed like it was trending that way, as evidenced by the whole “Arson Judge” drama. But, Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner was able to successfully keep Judge on a nine-year, $360 million contract.
After missing out on Judge, they pivoted to shortstop Carlos Correa, and they agreed to terms on a 13-year, $350 million deal. However, the Giants were hesitant to finalize the deal on the day of his introductory press conference due to an ankle issue. Ultimately, Correa jumped on the Mets’ $315 million offer less than a day later, which was never finalized either.
The Giants were able to sign some solid players this offseason, like outfielders Mitch Haniger and Michael Conforto. But it was a far cry from who the Giants were expected to sign this offseason to help them contend for a World Series next season.
Next offseason, the Giants can try to make the biggest free agent signing of them all by bringing in Ohtani. Sure, Giants fans have heard it before, “they are going to get the top free agent.” But after missing out on two superstars this offseason, that could give them more determination to ensure that Ohtani doesn’t sign with another team.
