Saints continue to create cap space with restructures
Every year, it’s the same thing with this Saints team. They enter the offseason with a comically low (usually, negative) amount of cap space to work with. Then, they restructure some deals, move problems into future years, work their magic, and create a flexible amount of cash for them to try to build a winning team each year.
As bad as factions of the fanbase want the team to simply pivot themselves to a full-on rebuild to hard reset, the team is committed to trying to contend. That’s what it seems like these moves are pointing them toward. The Saints probably want to use cap space on Derek Carr, but his rumored desired contract seems to indicate he has no interest in New Orleans.
The Saints have restructured several deals already. One of the big ones was Ryan Ramczyk. Next up was Tryann Mathieu today.
Tom Pelissero had the news:
The #Saints restructured safety Tyrann Mathieu’s contract, clearing another $4.668 million in 2023 salary cap space. Continuing to chip away …

The Saints cleared $4.668 million in cap space with the restructuring of Mathieu’s contract.
Additionally, the Saints are closing in on a multiyear extension with Tanoh Kpassagnon, also according to Pelissero. Kpassagnon, drafted in 2017, had 28 tackles, 2.0 sacks, and 6.0 QB hits last season.
