Fate did not fall short this time, as the Padres finalized an 11-year, $350 million extension well before the summer. Machado is now under contract with the Friars through the 2033 MLB season. He will be the epitome of this is 40 when we do get there. Let’s hope he ages as gracefully as Paul Rudd. So when you see him standing there, in 2033 with short gray hair, you already know.

We will be watching, waiting, commiserating as Machado is playing baseball in San Diego for a decade.

If the Padres were a flavor of ice cream, it would be something over the mint variety. In truth, mint makes everything better. It is the bacon of herbs. The reason why the Padres embody the concept of mint so well is they are printing money like a freaking mint at this point. They are doing more to escalate inflation than the Queen City ever could. The Padres are baseball’s biggest spenders now.

For a city that did not want to pay for the Chargers to have a new stadium, the Padres will probably be paying Machado more per plate appearance than Bob Nutting would spend on the entire Pittsburgh Pirates’ payroll in a given season if it were up to him. Machado might be able to afford beachfront real estate in Malibu, or at least be able to afford every burrito known to mankind.

Ultimately, we have to applaud the Padres willingness to spend, spend, spend, spend, spend. This is a small market franchise that simply does not care about that label. They are going to go blow-for-blow with the Steve Cohens of the world. The best part is Padres fans win. Of course, Machado cannot fall off a cliff precipitously at any point in his 30s. He cannot be baseball’s Russell Wilson…
