The Cowboys need to hit it big in free agency if they want to be Super Bowl contenders next year. Here are five high-quality targets for Dallas.

Free agency isn’t the most efficient means of improving a roster for any NFL team, but the Cowboys have the advantage of being a big draw for stars hitting the open market. The key for Dallas’ front office is to avoid overpaying big names just because they might excite the fan base.

This offseason the Cowboys should narrow their free agent focus on filling obvious holes in the roster. Dak Prescott needs to see one or two quality wide receivers added to his receiving corps. The defense can use help at defensive tackle and linebacker.

It might not be possible for Dallas to fill all their needs via free agency but landing any of the following five players would be a solid step in the right direction.

5. Sheldon Rankins

Signing a solid starter at defensive tackle isn’t going to electrify the Cowboys’ fan base, but it would make defensive coordinator Dan Quinn pretty happy. He understands the clear need for Dallas to strengthen its run-stopping ability up front.

Rankins isn’t a star pass-rusher or run-stopper but he provides real value because he’s solid in both phases of play. The Cowboys can deploy him in the middle of their defensive line with the confidence that he can hold up as a true three-down player.

Combine that with the reality that the market for defensive tackles is only increasing around the league and it’s easy to see why Rankins will generate interest from multiple teams. The Cowboys need to move quickly if they want to add Rankins to their starting lineup next season.
