5) Why Yankees prospect Trey Sweeney is already on the trade block

Trey Sweeney is another guy in a similar position as Gomez. The 20th overall selection from the 2021 draft, Sweeney is a shortstop who will probably need to switch positions if he’s going to end up with the Yankees.

His professional career hasn’t gotten off to a strong start. In 646 plate appearances he’s slashing .245/.357/.442. It’s far too early to draw any conclusions to write him off completely. What makes him a trade block candidate is the presence of Volpe and Peraza far ahead of him in terms of prospect ranking and MLB-readiness.

Sweeney carries a ton of value with him for a guy slipping through the cracks in terms of big hype Yankees prospects. Maybe the only argument in favor of putting an untouchable label on him would be if he moves to third base and improves his hitting. Otherwise, Sweeney feels like one of the bigger prospects the team could trade at some point this summer.

It works out well for them that he is a shortstop. It’s a position of need for many teams. And even if they have a player locked in at the position already, the athleticism the position requires could mean Sweeney more easily shifts to another position.

Few, if any, fans have Sweeney penciled in as the future starting shortstop for the Yankees. Striking sometime this season, while he remains a pretty big prospect for the organization, might be the best move to make.
