Yankees outfielder Oswaldo Cabrera asked to play a new position while mic’d up during a spring training game and Aaron Boone granted his wish.

Mic’d up early in the New York Yankees game on Saturday afternoon against the Tampa Bay Rays, Oswaldo Cabrera saw a lot of action.

First, Luis Severino gave up a home run to left field, opposite where Cabrera was playing. Then, the next batter sailed one over Cabrera’s head to right field.

Then, he got a curious question from Jack Curry of YES Network… If Aaron Boone gave him free reign to choose his position for a day, what would he choose?

Cabrera’s answer was centerfield.

Curry and Ryan Ruocco promised they’d check with Aaron Boone when they spoke with him later in the game and ask if he could get that done for him.

When they asked Boone, he basically said, ‘sure, why not?’

No, in seriousness, Boone said he already had that sketched up in the plans. Later in the week, he plans to have Cabrera back up Harrison Bader, the team’s starting centerfielder.

Cabrera has played right field and left field for the Yankees so far after playing primarily as an infielder in the minor leagues.

Oswaldo Cabrera playing multiple positions is great for the Yankees

The Yankees could use some flexibility from the spunky and youthful Cabrera. He did great in the outfield considering it was a new position for him, and his ambition to take on the challenge of centerfield is appreciated.

The team has no strong left fielder, so Cabrera could help there most right now if he could generate enough speed and spatial coverage in the outfield. Left and left-center at Yankee field are spacious and deep. Considering he can already fill in at any infield spot other than first base if truly needed, he’s becoming a D.J. LeMahieu type for the Yankees.

If he can even come close to filling in at center field in an emergency, it opens up a world of possibilities for the Yankees. It’s nothing new for New York, who has already seen the tone set by its captain for changing positions if the team needs it, with Aaron Judge already offering to go to left field.
