UFC 285 Jon Jones vs. Ciryl Gane: Live results tracker [UPDATED]

We are just hours away from the return of one of the greatest fighters to ever step foot in the UFC Octagon — Jon “Bones” Jones. He will meet Ciryl Gane in a fight for the vacant UFC heavyweight championship in the card’s main event.

This will be the first time that Jones steps into the Octagon in three years, last fighting, and defeating, Dominick Reyes at UFC 246 in February 2020. Since that time, Jones has sought a move up to the heavyweight division, and he gets that opportunity here.

For the longest time, there had been rumblings of a potential fight between Jones and Francis Ngannou. The two were rumored (and teased) to square off at some point in 2020, but that never came to fruition for a variety of reasons.

The plan then was for Jones to challenge Ngannou upon this return to the UFC, but this ended up falling through due to negotiations between Ngannou and the UFC falling apart, which saw Ngannou part ways with the promotion.

Jones has been near unstoppable in the Octagon, with the only loss in his career coming by way of a controversial disqualification in December 2009.

Jones has held the UFC light heavyweight title on two occasions. His first reign began when he defeated Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at UFC 128, and he’d successfully defend the title eight times over the next four years before being stripped of the title for his 2015 hit-and-run incident.

Jones began his second reign when he bested Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 232. This run was not as prominent. Though he won a defense against Anthony Smith, he could have been disqualified for an illegal knee. He edged out Thiago Santos on a split decision at UFC 239, marking the first time in history Jones dropped a scorecard. Many people then felt he lost his title defense against Reyes.

Jones technically won the belt a third time when he stopped Daniel Cormier at UFC 214, but the result was overturned, and the title was returned to Cormier, after a failed drug test.

Gane, who is 11-1 in his MMA career, won the interim heavyweight championship by defeating Derrick Lewis at UFC 265 but lost his title unification bout with Ngannou at UFC 270.

Gane most recently fought at UFC Paris in September, knocking out Tai Tuivasa in that card’s main event.

Here’s how the whole card played out on Saturday in Las Vegas.
