Texas Rangers manager Bruce Bochy provided a positive update on starting pitcher Jacob deGrom, who suffered an injury early in spring training.

The Texas Rangers made bolstering their starting rotation the priority this offseason, and they added quite a few arms. Perhaps the biggest name was former New York Mets ace Jacob deGrom on a massive five-year, $185 million contract. But, at the start of Rangers spring training, deGrom experienced tightness in his left side and has yet to pitch in a Cactus League game. Could he be nearing his debut?

On Saturday, Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said that deGrom is set to throw a live bullpen session on Wednesday. From there, he said he will “evaluate the situation” and take things from there.

Since suffering the tightness in his left side, deGrom gradually worked his way back. From playing light catch, to throwing off a mound, to throwing a bullpen session. Now, as Bochy says, deGrom will face live batters in a bullpen session. From there, the Rangers will see if he will see some spring training action with Opening Day scheduled to take place on March 30.

When it comes to deGrom, injuries are an area of concern, especially in recent years. He missed most of the second half of the 2021 season due to inflammation of his UCL. Then, ahead of the 2022 campaign, he dealt with a stress reaction of the right scapula, which sidelined him until August.

Yet, when he is healthy, especially in his return last season, he showed that he is still one of the best pitchers of the game. The Rangers, long in need of some starting pitching, leaped at the opportunity to sign deGrom.

Rangers fans will be waiting for updates after the bullpen session this Wednesday to see if there will be yet another positive update on the way.
