NFL rumors: Buccaneers post-Tom Brady life just got even sadder

No team is more likely to go first-to-worst in its own division than the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Tom Brady has retired for a second time, and this time he means it! With The GOAT having closed the book on his illustrious playing career, it is a lot of Kyle Trask in Tampa Bay. Trask had one great year at Florida, but is unproven. As for who could compete with him, how about Baker Mayfield?

Ian Rapoport of The NFL Network reported on very late Sunday morning that the Buccaneers view Mayfield as a potential starting quarterback for them. Mayfield was a superstar Heisman Trophy winner at Oklahoma in college, but was never better than the 20th-best quarterback in the NFL during his four-year run in Cleveland. He split time between the Panthers and Rams last season.

In truth, Mayfield is one of the 25 best guys on the planet at playing quarterback. Unfortunately, that puts him into the bridge quarterback category going forward. Not to say he has any real shot left to be somebody’s franchise quarterback, but what are the Buccaneers going to do? They are desperate. Since they are probably not drafting one in the first round, they may have to sign him.

Mayfield seemed to fit into what Sean McVay was doing in Los Angeles, but he will start in Tampa.
