Projected WWE WrestleMania 39 match card after March 17 SmackDown
By Scott Rogust
On the March 17 episode of WWE Friday Night SmackDown, there were more matches added to the Apr. 1 and 2 WrestleMania 39 cards.
WrestleMania 39 is a two weeks away, and the two-night card is growing with more matches. On Apr. 1 and 2, WWE hosts it’s biggest event of the year at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif., home of the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams and Chargers.
This past Monday on Raw, there as a huge match added to the card, Edge vs. Finn Balor in a Hell in a Cell match. That officially brought the match total to eight.
On the March 17 episode of Friday Night SmackDown, there were multiple matches confirmed for WrestleMania 39. Let’s take a look at what bouts were confirmed, and which ones will be made official in the final four television shows ahead of WrestleMania.
WWE WrestleMania 39 match card: Confirmed matches
Here are the confirmed WrestleMania 39 matches entering the March 17 episode of SmackDown:
- Undisputed WWE Universal Championship: Roman Reigns (c) vs. Cody Rhodes
- SmackDown Women’s Championship: Charlotte Flair (c) vs. Rhea Ripley
- Raw Women’s Championship: Bianca Belair (c) vs. Asuka
- Brock Lesnar vs. Omos (with MVP)
- Seth Rollins vs. Logan Paul
- United States Championship: Austin Theory (c) vs. John Cena

Here are matches that were confirmed during this week’s episode of SmackDown:
- Fatal Four Way Women’s Tag Team WrestleMania Showcase match: Liv Morgan and Raquel Rodriguez vs. TBA vs. TBA vs. TBA
- Fatal Four Way Men’s Tag Team WrestleMania Showcase match: TBA vs. TBA vs. TBA vs. TBA
- Intercontinental Championship: Gunther (c) vs. Drew McIntyre vs. Sheamus
On SmackDown, two WrestleMania Showcase matches (men’s and women’s) were confirmed for the big show. Specifically, they are two fatal four-way tag team matches. In the first qualification match for the women’s match, Liv Morgan and Raquel Rodriguez defeated Tegan Nox and Emma to clinch their spot at WrestleMania.
We now await the three other women’s teams to qualify for the match. That, and which four men’s tag teams will qualify for the WrestleMania Showcase match.
McIntyre and Sheamus each scored simultaneous pinfalls in last week’s No. 1 contender’s match for Gunther’s Intercontinental championship at WrestleMania 39. So, a one-on-one match was made for this week’s episode of SmackDown. Both friends turned adversaries put on a competitive bout, but the two knocked each other out. As the referee was close to counting them both out at 10, Gunther entered the ring, pleading with the two to get up. Gunther, Ludwig Kaiser and Giovanni Vinci attacked the duo, causing a disqualification.
Adam Pearce appeared on the titantron, and announced that Gunther will now face Sheamus and McIntyre at WrestleMania.
Expected WWE WrestleMania 39 match card additions
- Rey Mysterio vs. Dominik Mysterio
- Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championships: The Uso’s (Jimmy Uso and Jey Uso) (c) vs. Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens
To start off the show, Cody Rhodes called Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn to the ring so they could reconcile. It was hard, considering that Owens still harbored ill will towards Zayn, who was part of The Bloodline and attacked him at the Survivor Series War Games match. Zayn brought up the amount of times that the two turned on one another, but that they still found ways to reunite. Owens initially wanted no part of Zayn’s apology, leaving the arena early on in the show.
In the main event, Zayn had a face-to-face confrontation with Jey Uso, who had attacked him to solidify his standing with The Bloodline last week. Jey said that protecting his family has been important to him since he was young. Zayn then said that he had a choice to not take Reigns’ abuse anymore, and he took it by hitting him with a steel chair at the Royal Rumble. Zayn says he knows that Jey regrets not making that choice when he had the chance, and accuses of him of being mad that he didn’t hit Reigns with that chair first. That then led to Jey attacking Zayn, and Jimmy Uso joined him.
Owens’ music hit, and attacked the duo from behind. He hit Jimmy with a Stunner and Jey with a Pop-Up Powerbomb to stand alone in the ring with Zayn. After a brief pause, Owens and Zayn hugged, which drew a monstrous reaction from the crowd.
Zayn and Owens are finally united in their battle against the Bloodline. It will only be a matter of time until their match with the Uso’s is made official.
Once again, Dominick Mysterio continued his pursuit of getting a match at WrestleMania 39 against his father, Rey. After Dominik and Rhea Ripley defeated Santos Escobar and Zelina Vega in a mixed-tag team match, he continued to call out his father. Rey walked to the ring and had a conversation with Dominik, saying that his biggest regret is what his son has become. Rey then said that if someone as “ungrateful, disrespectful, pathetic” as Dominik called him out at WrestleMania, he would “whoop their a**.” But, Rey once again declined to face Dominik at WrestleMania, saying it would be his “biggest disgrace as a father.”
