Teams that should give Cam Newton his comeback chance: Kansas City Chiefs

Another team that stands out as a possible destination for Newton is the reigning Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs. Newton would, of course, not be in the running to replace superstar QB Patrick Mahomes as their starter, but he would give them a valuable backup with a plethora of overall experience.

The Chiefs should be in the market for a backup quarterback as well, as Chad Henne retired. Although they have Shane Buechele as their current backup, he has yet to throw an NFL attempt. It would be a good idea to bring in another experienced QB like Newton because of this. It also does not hurt that Newton’s speed would allow him to help the Chiefs in other situations as well.

Although the Chiefs adding Newton would not be a game-changing signing, it would give them some much-needed insurance at QB if Mahomes suffers any injuries during the year. With that, it would not hurt to have another veteran in their locker room to help mentor their younger players.

Lastly, although Newton likely wants to be a starter, it also seems possible that he wouldn’t mind being a backup on an elite team like the Chiefs. After all, he has yet to add a Super Bowl ring to his resume.
