4 free agents the Buccaneers missed out on thanks to Tom Brady’s retirement
1. Jakobi Meyers
When it was announced that Jakobi Meyers would be testing free agency, he stood out as the perfect free-agent target for the Buccaneers. He would have formed a ridiculous one-two punch with fellow star wide receiver Mike Evans, and it could have been enough for Tampa Bay to look like legitimate threats again. Yet, with Brady out of the picture, it naturally hurt the Buccaneers’ chances of landing him, and he opted to sign a hefty three-year, $33 million deal with the Las Vegas Raiders.
Meyers would have been an outstanding addition, and one can see that when taking a look at his stats from last season. In 14 games with New England on the year, he recorded six touchdowns, 67 receptions, and 804 receiving yards. The Patriots naturally wanted to keep the four-year veteran around after his breakout season, but he tested his value on the free-agent market and secured an excellent contract with the Raiders.
It is hard to not imagine how strong Tampa Bay could have been if they had both Brady and Meyers on their roster for this upcoming season. Playing with a legend like Brady could have even helped Meyers take that next step and become one of the top players in the league, but alas, that simply could not happen due to the GOAT retiring.
