Rangers bring back veteran catcher Sandy Leon
Free-agent catcher Sandy Leon and the Texas Rangers are in agreement on a contract, according to sources familiar with the deal. Leon, who was released by the Rangers on Monday, immediately re-signed with the team.
The Rangers considered free-agent catcher Kevin Plawecki, who has a strong relationship with Nathan Eovaldi and Jacob deGrom, sources said. But the team elected to re-sign Leon, who hit .250/.333/.406 with a .740 OPS in 36 plate appearances this spring.
Leon, who previously spent time with the Nationals, Red Sox, and Marlins, spent the 2022 season between the Guardians and Twins but played in only 33 games and totaled just 86 plate appearances.
For the season, Leon, 34, had a slash line of just .169/.298/.211 but remained an average defensive presence behind the plate, posting a standard 0.0 dWAR for his time between Cleveland and Minnesota.
