Marcus Thuram is set to leave Borussia Monchengladbach this summer but the club could replace him with U.S. men’s national team forward Brandon Vazquez.

Brandon Vazquez has scored one goal and got an assist for FC Cincinnati in MLS this season but was left out of the USMNT squad for their games against Grenada and El Salvador.

According to Sky Sports reporter Marlon Irlbacher, “Roland Virkus (Monchengladbach Sporting Director) was out in the US during the international break to watch Cincinnati FC striker Brandon #Vazquez as a possible Thuram successor. This scored the 1-0 winner against Nashville SC. Contract in the #MLS until 2025. Discussions are ongoing with the player’s management.”

The USMNT forward is yet to play in Europe, so this could be a fantastic opportunity for him. The move would help him force his way back into the USMNT fold.

Brandon Vazquez’s career so far

Vazquez started his career with the Mexican side of Tijuana. Although he played just once for the club in the Copa MX Apertura before joining Atlanta United.

At Atlanta, Vazquez won MLS Cup and the U.S. Open Cup. In total, he scored nine goals in 39 appearances for the club. He then joined his current side Cincinnati where he has found the back of the net 27 times in 92 games.

The 24-year-old also has two caps for the USMNT. He scored on his debut against Serbia this year and also featured against Columbia. However, he was not involved in the recent Nations League games.

As his two games for the US came in friendly matches, Vazquez could still change his international allegiance to the other country he is eligible to represent, Mexico.

Would Monchengladbach be a good fit for Brandon Vasquez?

So far in his career, Vazquez has only played in the USA and Mexico. To join Monchengladbach, a side that plays in the Bundesliga which is one of Europe’s top five leagues would be a step in the right direction.

Monchengladbach is currently 10th in the German league. They have an outside chance of qualifying for European competition next season. The pressure would be on Vazquez to replace Thuram’s goals. Thuram has scored 12 goals in 24 Bundesliga games this season and is expected to make a move to one of Europe’s top sides.

The most recent USMNT squad had Daryl Dike and Ricardo Pepi in it. Dike plays for West Bromwich Albion in the Championship in England whilst Pepi plays for Groningen in the Netherlands. There is also talk of Folarin Balogun making a switch from England to play for the Stars and Stripes. Balogun is on loan at Stade de Reims from Arsenal and is scoring for fun in Ligue 1.

In order for Vazquez to compete with these players for a starting place in the USMNT’s lineup then he must be playing at the highest level. If he can perform in the Bundesliga then it will be hard for whoever the next head coach of the national team is to overlook him.
