The New York Mets sent Brett Baty down in favor of starting Eduardo Escobar, and the fans watched his at-bat in Triple-A this season.

Once spring training neared its end, all 30 MLB teams made their roster decisions official. Breaking the trend from the past, some teams named their top prospects Opening Day starters. They were notably Jordan Walker of the St. Louis Cardinals and Anthony Volpe of the New York Yankees. But for Mets fans, they were upset to hear that third baseman prospect Brett Baty would not make the roster, despite a strong spring.

The Mets won their Opening Day game, but lost 2-1 on Friday night to the Miami Marlins, where they were only able to notch four hits.

Meanwhile, Baty competed in his first game of the season for the Triple-A Syracuse Mets, and in his very first at-bat, he hit a 106-mph double to left field.

Mets: Brett Baty makes immediate impact in first at-bat of season in Triple-A

That was Baty’s only hit of the game in five at-bats.

The Mets went with Eduardo Escobar as their starting third baseman. In the team’s season-opening game, Escobar recorded just one hit in four at-bats, striking out twice. On Friday night, Escobar went 0-for-3 in the batter’s box, striking out once.

At the time it became known that Baty was not making the team, Mets general manager Billy Eppler said the team believed he was better off starting the year in Triple-A. Eppler continued citing top-tier third basemen like Nolan Arenado, Rafael Devers, and Austin Riley playing 300 games at the minor league level. Baty had logged 206 minor league games playing third base.

“You learn by playing a lot, and while he had a great camp, we’re really excited about his future, there’s just some more development markers left for him to reach,” said Eppler. “He’ll go down, probably carry a lot that he consumed here in Triple-A and we’re really excited about his future and the type of kid he is and what he does in the batter’s box, but also the strides he’s made defensively.”

If Baty gets on a hot streak and produces at a high-level in Triple-A, Mets fans will only get more vocal with their displeasure about the team not naming him to the Opening Day roster. The Mets are just two games into the season, so there’s a chance for things to turn around for them. 160 more games to go.
