Liam Hendriks announces he closed out cancer on Instagram

White Sox relief pitcher Liam Hendriks announced he completed his final round of chemo and is officially cancer-free.

Chicago White Sox closer Liam Hendriks shared a message on Instagram to celebrate beating cancer, and it’s the exact kind of feel-good story you need to hear today.

Hendriks revealed he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma back in January and has been battling his cancer for the past several months. On Wednesday, Hendriks shared the best news: he beat it. He closed out cancer.

In his emotional message, Hendriks thanked his family, friends, and fans for their support as well as the medical staff that helped treat him; he also posted a video in which he rang the victory bell, signifying the beginning of a new, healthier chapter in Hendriks’ life.

It appears as though Hendriks’ cancer treatment has gone as well as possible, and he could be set to rejoin the team shortly.

Chicago hasn’t named an exact date as to when the 34-year-old relief pitcher may return, but the club did place him on the 15-Day IL instead of the 60-Day IL, suggesting he could be back sooner rather than later.

Hendriks was seen working out at Spring Training but obviously wasn’t at full health then.

Back in March, fellow White Sox pitcher Lance Lynn gave his prediction on the Foul Territory podcast for when fans can see Hendriks on the field again:

"We hope to get him back by June if everything is perfect. In his mind he’ll be back in May. He goes, ‘Oh, I’ll be ready as soon as they give me the go.’"

Hendriks will still have to go through a training program to get up to speed, but he’s already cleared his biggest and most daunting obstacle of his life and MLB career.
