MLB Rumors: What’s next for the Red Sox?

Discontent in Boston? Is it a Thursday?

Red Sox fans are never happy, but it’s been a tough week. Adam Duvall went down with an injury, and they suffered a four-game sweep at the hands of the undefeated Tampa Bay Rays. Chaim Bloom needs to do something, and fast.

The fanbase turned on Bloom this offseason when Xander Bogaerts signed with the San Diego Padres. But, decisions to extend Rafael Devers and sign free agents like Justin Turner and Masataka Yoshida bought him some time.

Now that we’re midway through April, fans need to see results. John Tomase of NBC Sports Boston has already seen enough:

"“But when your starting shortstop is a sub-par defensive first baseman, and when your starting center fielder is your former starting shortstop who was previously your starting center fielder as the snake eats its own tail, and when the first man up in the infield is a waiver claim who barely attended spring training, and you have one of the highest payrolls in baseball, I’ll repeat the question: What the hell are we watching?”"

Tomase continued, suggesting that Bloom was brought in to replicate the Rays model in Boston, but has instead turned them into the Devil Rays. The joke fits, though it’s a little harsh since Bloom has accomplished some good with the Red Sox.

Nonetheless, the point remains — replacing Duvall isn’t easy, but Boston must do something. Sitting on their hands ends in another last-place AL East finish.
