MLB Rumors: How long will Braves keep Vaughn Grissom around?

We all knew it was coming. The Atlanta Braves called up Vaughn Grissom to replace Orlando Arcia, who was placed on the injured list Friday. Arcia was named the starting shortstop out of spring training thanks in part to his defensive versatility, which Grissom is lacking at this point in time.

However, what Grissom does offer is an electric bat, and he was absolutely raking at Triple-A Gwinnett. Atlanta could use just that, even if it’s as a part-time DH, part-time infielder role. Grissom has experience at shortstop and second base. He’s a better DH than Marcell Ozuna, plus Travis d’Arnaud is currently injured.

Still, the issues the Braves had with Grissom aren’t going anywhere. He doesn’t have much experience at shortstop, and should this major-league experience go poorly in the field, he’ll likely get the boot down to the minors when Arcia comes back.

In some ways, that’s a good thing. The Braves see a lot in Grissom, and view him as a possible long-term solution at shortstop. But as FanSided’s John Buhler points out, nothing is guaranteed for the young infielder this time around:

"“While Grissom quickly became a fan favorite for all of Braves Country last summer, he essentially got benched down the stretch once his bat cooled off. Atlanta still has veteran utilityman Ehire Adrianza on the roster, but he has played sparingly up to this point. Factor in Ozzie Albies not being quite right after his injury-plagued 2022, as he could be one play from going on IL again.”"

Grissom must make an impression, and fast.
