A win-win trade between the Marlins and Twins

Speaking of Lopez, the early candidate for trade of the offseason is the deal that sent right-hander Pablo Lopez, shortstop Jose Salas and outfielder Byron Chourio to the Minnesota Twins and Luis Arraez to the Miami Marlins.

Lopez, as mentioned above, just signed a four-year, $73.5 million deal with the Twins and looks every bit the frontline starter that the team envisioned when they acquired him. Arraez, meanwhile, is hitting .471/.526/.647 with a 1.173 OPS and also recorded the first cycle in Marlins franchise history.

“A good baseball trade” is how many executives describe this trade, and it’s a classic case of a win-win for both teams. For the Marlins, they traded from their pitching surplus to upgrade their offense, clearly its biggest weakness. The Twins were confident in their offense and had some concerns with Arraez, mostly how his legs would hold up long-term, and felt comfortable trading him to secure pitching upgrades.

The trade has worked out for both teams — and the four-year extension for Lopez was the latest example of that.
