Draymond Green’s punishment for stomp heard ’round the world is stunning

The Draymond Green suspension and punishment for stomping on Domantas Sabonis during Game 2 of the Warriors-Kings NBA Playoff series is reportedly shocking.

UPDATE: Since publication, the NBA decided to suspend Draymond Green, but established a questionable precedent in the process.

Marring what should be one of the best First Round series in the 2023 NBA Playoffs between the Golden State Warriors and Sacramento Kings, master-instigator Draymond Green was the story coming out of the Warriors’ Game 2 loss as he was ejected for stomping on Kings big man Domantas Sabonis after the two got tangled up.

Every angle of the incident looks worse for Green and everyone has been patiently waiting for the punishment to be handed down.

And somehow, we’re going to keep waiting.

Shams Charania of The Athletic reported that Green is not expected to be suspended for the stomp that led to his dismissal from the game.

Given that Draymond Green has a history of hitting opponents below the belt, mixing it up in unseemly ways pretty routinely, and generally being a problem child on the floor for the Warriors, to see the NBA not hand out a suspension for stomping on an opponent is truly shocking. This isn’t a player with a clean track record — far from it. So the benefit of the doubt should be long gone out the window.

Now, there should still be some punishment coming as it’d be impossible for Green to come out of this situation without Adam Silver at least issuing some sort of fine to the Golden State veteran. However, that still feels almost inconsequential given the severity of the incident.

Alas, all signs point to Green being on the floor for Game 3 and beyond in the Warriors-Kings series, barring another incident. I’m sure there won’t be any type of bad blood or animosity over the stomp that could potentially boil over in the remaining games…
