Warriors that need to step up in Draymond Green’s absence: Kevon Looney
Kevon Looney is the player the Warriors need to step up more than any in Green’s absence. Sabonis is a force, and without Green to help cover him, Looney needs to make the absolute most of his minutes against Domantas to make sure the Kings need to look elsewhere for points.
Looney has defended Sabonis the most in this series so far, holding him to 6-of-18 shooting, 33.3%, better than Green’s 42.9% allowed guarding Sabonis.
The Warriors have kept Looney dropped low against Sabonis. So far, that strategic gamble has not bit the Warriors in any fashion, but if they start hitting threes in those scenarios, Golden State may be forced to re-evaluate.
As the center point of the defense, Looney also has a responsibility to serve as the communication hub for Golden State on defense. Without Green, the Warriors will drop in cumulative defensive IQ, but Looney can help make up for that by making life easier for his teammates.
