Josh Hader, San Diego Padres

The San Diego Padres have spent an immense amount of resources, both financially and prospects, to build the current roster. And that certainly includes Josh Hader, who they acquired at the trade deadline last year from the Milwaukee Brewers.

Hader is open to an extension in San Diego. But the two sides have not come to an agreement and there are not believed to be any ongoing conversations at this time, meaning that the star reliever appears headed for free agency at the end of 2023.

Padres general manager AJ Preller had long coveted Hader. For years, he called the Brewers attempting to acquire Hader, only to be rebuffed. Now that he has the left-hander, it would make sense for the team to make an effort to sign him to a contract in excess of Edwin Diaz’s five-year, $102 million contract.

Perhaps Preller waits until the offseason to kickstart negotiations. But extending Hader should be among the Padres’ top priorities.
