Is Colorado’s mass exodus of transfers a bad sign for Deion Sanders?

Former Colorado football players are leaving Boulder in droves since Deion Sanders took over.

Deion Sanders made it abundantly clear to the Colorado football players he inherited that the ones who are weak will weed themselves out.

After doing great things at Jackson State, it was a bit shocking that Coach Prime made the jump to CU. Not because it was such a big leap up to the Power Five level, but Colorado was arguably the worst program in the country last year. The Buffaloes went 1-11 in a season that was lost from the jump. While Sanders has attacked the transfer portal ferociously, it has gone the other way.

With a staggering 17 players entering the portal after last Saturday’s spring game, how concerned should we be about year one under Sanders in Boulder? Should we be concerned at all or it this merely part of the plan?

One thing is for sure. Sanders is not for everyone, but he has never wavered in his authenticity.

Let me make one thing perfectly clear. Sanders is my favorite NFL player of all time, so I will ride and die with Coach Prime forever. However, I can totally understand how bad this mass exodus from Boulder looks optically. We haven’t seen this many people leave Colorado since the South Park boys used a drill to burrow through some dirty mud hippies to turn off the groovy tunes, man.

Extracurriculars may be more than half the reason to attend CU, but you’re not going to win games sitting at home on the couch with your head in the clouds and a bowl of stale Cool Ranch Doritos straight chilling next to you, dawg. Colorado decided it didn’t want to be terrible at football anymore, so the university hired Sanders. This is what y’all signed up for, so don’t back out now.

Frankly, the biggest reason why I am in favor of this mass exodus is you want people who want to be with you, to help build something special. Fair-weather friends, and people in general, are B.S.! More importantly, this 100 percent is part of Sanders’ plan to rebuild this thing in a hurry. The more guys who leave, the more guys he can bring in who will buy into what he wants to do at CU.

Building a team through the transfer portal is a double-edged sword. You can have incredible success with it like former Colorado head coach Mel Tucker had in 2021 with the Michigan State Spartans. Sparty won a New Year’s Six bowl, but it hit the fan once again after former Wake Forest running back Kenneth Walker III decided to turn pro. Hitting the portal hard is not very sustainable.

The good news for Sanders and his staff is recruitment seems to be a paramount driving force for them. As long as they are able to recruit their type of guys, those who want to come to Boulder and play for the greatest cover cornerback of all time, they should be more than fine. Perhaps this mass exodus of players limits CU’s chances of going 6-6 to achieve bowl eligibility? Or maybe not?

Either way, the Colorado program of yesteryear died the minute Coach Prime strolled into town.
