The New York Mets are struggling as of recently, and one statistic regarding of how the heart of their order is performing against the Washington Nationals.

The New York Mets were the big spenders this past offseason, where they are expected to contend for a postseason spot. Recently, however, the Mets have entered a slump, losing three games in a row entering Wednesday night. They were already defeated in their series-opener against the Washington Nationals, and they looked to avoid losing the series altogether on Wednesday.

Unfortunately, the Mets lost 4-1 to bring their losing streak to four in a row. This is also the team’s longest losing streak under Buck Showalter as their manager. In case that wasn’t bad enough, there is this stat that will really make fans sick.

Through their first two games against the Nationals, the Mets’ 2-3-4 hitters have gone 2-for-24 at the plate and struck out eight times. Those two hits? Both singles.

The batters in those spots were shortstop outfielder Starling Marte, shortstop Francisco Lindor and first baseman Pete Alonso.

That’s not ideal, considering that is the heart of New York’s batting order.

If there is credit to go around, it is to Marte. In Wednesday’s game, Marte’s single to left field helped third baseman Eduardo Escobar score at home to cut their deficit to 2-1. Other than that, that is the only run the trio of Marte, Lindor and Alonso have knocked in through the first two games of the Washington series.

This is no time to panic for the Mets and the fanbase. There is still plenty of season to go for the team to turn things around. But if this becomes a trend that lasts a long time, then there is reason to be concerned.
