Rangers ace Jacob deGrom was placed on the 15-day injured list on Saturday in a devastating blow to the club.

Texas Rangers pitcher Jacob deGrom was placed on the 15-day injured list due to right elbow inflammation, the latest setback in this injury-stricken stretch of his career.

DeGrom left Friday’s game against the New York Yankees early due to forearm tightness, and now more details of deGrom’s condition have come to light.

The Rangers are calling deGrom’s injury “elbow inflammation,” and the sole silver lining is that deGrom didn’t look like he was in terrible pain when leaving the Yankees game.

That marked the second early exit in his last three starts this season, making many Rangers fans wonder if deGrom will ever stay healthy in his advanced years.

The two-time Cy Young winner was bogged down by injuries in his final seasons on the New York Mets, and the pricey deal he signed with Texas this past offseason isn’t looking too good from the Rangers’ point of view.

Rangers’ Jacob deGrom placed on IL due to elbow inflammation

The Rangers won’t be so quick to flush that $185 million down the drain, as there is still hope for deGrom to bounce back.

When healthy, deGrom has posted a 2.09 ERA and 12.3 strikeouts per nine innings since 2018. Texas first started worrying about deGrom’s sustainability issues this past spring training, when deGrom also had to miss some time due to injury.

It’s worth nothing that deGrom hasn’t played a full season in which he avoided landing on the IL since 2017.

Here’s what Rangers general manager Chris Young had to say about deGrom’s latest injury woes:

"“There’s no need to push him. He came in today and felt okay, which is a positive, but given how important he is to us and our season, we’re going to play this very cautiously and see how he responds over the next several days to treatment.”"

The Rangers’ decision to place deGrom on IL was reportedly “precautionary,” and fans will be anxiously waiting to hear updates on the ace’s recovery timeline. Hopefully, it’s just inflammation and nothing more serious than that.
