Buy or Sell: Predicting if the best and worst starts in MLB will last
Buy: Chicago White Sox’s last place start
Entering 2023, I thought the Chicago White Sox had a chance to be really, really bad. And it’s been worse than I could have ever imagined.
The White Sox are 10-21 and seven games back in the American League Central — and have the look of a team that might be an aggressive seller in July.
It’s uncertain just how much team owner Jerry Reinsdorf would allow the front office to sell. There are plenty of players on expiring contracts, headlined by Lucas Giolito and Mike Clevinger, who could be attractive trade pieces. But would he allow general manager Rick Hahn to consider moving on from ace Dylan Cease or even Eloy Jimenez?
Jimenez feels unlikely, considering his injury history and recent struggles. Trading him now would be selling low, and that doesn’t feel like something Hahn would consider. But Cease could be an interesting trade asset and considering that any potential acquiring team would have him for three postseason runs, it could lead to a substantial trade package in return.
