NBA rumors: Phoenix Suns could still make a play for Kyrie Irving

The Phoenix Suns were quickly linked with the Nets after Kyrie Irving’s February trade demand but ended up swinging for Kevin Durant instead after the Mavericks landed Kyrie. Even in a 2-0 hole against the Nuggets, they clearly got the better of the two deals. However, NBA rumors about their interest in Irving haven’t faded away completely.

John Gambadoro of Arizona 98.7 FM, a reasonably plugged-in Suns insider, said this week he could see the Suns offering to send Deandre Ayton to the Mavericks in a sign-and-trade for Irving.

Gamadoro knows a lot more about how the Suns operate than I do, but I find this one extremely hard to believe. I’m skeptical that Durant would really be willing to team up with Irving again and sending out a center like Ayton, even one with his shortcomings, for another point guard when you still owe Chris Paul $30 million per season for the next two years seems like a losing proposition.
