Odell Beckham Jr. trade regrade after Dexter Lawrence contract: Giants

One of the big pieces of the trade was Jabrill Peppers, Cleveland’s first-round pick in 2017. It was a homecoming for Peppers, as he was a star for Paramus Catholic High School in New Jersey and became one of the top recruits in the country.

When healthy, Peppers was a solid player in New York’s defensive backfield. The thing is, he missed time due to a transverse process fracture in 2019 and a torn ACL and high ankle sprain in 2021. With the new regime of general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll coming in in 2022, Peppers wasn’t brought back. He reunited with former Giants head coach Joe Judge on the New England Patriots.

The real thing about this trade was to see how Gettleman would use the No. 17 and 95 overall picks. While Gettleman may have put the Giants deep in a hole in terms of cap space, he was decent at drafting. And with the 17th pick, he absolutely nailed it by selecting Lawrence out of Clemson.

In four years, Lawrence developed into one of the top defensive tackles in the entire league. This past season, Lawrence recorded 68 combined tackles (35 solo, 33 assisted), 28 quarterback hits, 7.5 sacks, seven tackles for loss, three defended passes and two forced fumble. He was named ot the Pro Bowl for the first time in his career.

As for Oshane Ximines at No. 95, he became a rotational outside linebacker for the team. In four years, he recorded 22 quarterback hits and 6.5 sacks. He was re-signed by the Giants one day earlier, but to a one-year deal.

The Giants get a better than passing grade for the trade, but they have been in wide receiver purgatory since then. Let’s not talk about the Kenny Golladay experiment. So, that prevents the Giants from getting an A.

Giants trade grade: B+
