The 149th running of the Kentucky Derby is on Saturday. While we all know the favorites, who are the biggest longshots to ever win the Kentucky Derby?

The run for the roses is on Saturday, May 6, 2023, for the 149th time. Horse racing fans across the world will tune in around 7:00 p.m. ET for the Kentucky Derby, which is the first leg of the triple crown and arguably the most important.

The Derby participants are determined by a point system which tracks results in specific prep races for 2 and 3-year-olds. Forte is the favorite this year at 3-to-1, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he will win the race. Of all sports, horse racing is perhaps the most unpredictable.

BetSided’s Brian Giuffra predicted several longshots which have a chance this year, if you’d like to put your money where your mouth is:

"“I’ve been on Verifying at 15-1 and Skinner at 20-1 all week and I won’t back off now. But I am going to add another mini-long shot to replace Practical Move,” Giuffra wrote. “Two Phil’s at 12-1 has intrigued me all week and I’m willing to back him now. He’s a fast horse with a better speed rating than everyone in this race including the favorite, Forte. Speed isn’t everything in this race, but it is an important factor.”"

Donerail in the 1913 Kentucky Derby is still the biggest longshot to ever win at 91-1. Since then, however, there have been several horses to defy the odds.

Rich Strike won the 2022 Kentucky Derby at 80-1, which shocked the world as the second-biggest longshot to ever claim victory. Beyond that, Country House won at 65-1 in 2019, Giacamo won at 50-1 in 2005 and Mine That Bird won at 50-1 in 2009.

As previously mentioned, horse racing is tough to predict, and weather is just one factor that can screw everything up.

Some horses just love the slop.
