Vaughn Grissom will be replaced by Orlando Arcia on the Atlanta Braves’ 25-man roster.

The Atlanta Braves are getting their starting shortstop back with Orlando Arcia coming off the IL.

While it is great to get that sweet Orlando Magic back, this means popular up-and-comer Vaughn Grissom will be sent back to Triple-A Gwinnett. Although Grissom held his own at the plate while Arcia worked his way back from a broken wrist, his defense at shortstop left a lot to be desired, with six errors in 18 starts. With Braden Shewmake debuting on Friday and Marcell Ozuna hitting well, it was the right move.

Here is the official move the Braves made heading into their series finale vs. the Baltimore Orioles.

While it stinks to see Grissom get sent down, we wish his glove nothing but the best in Gwinnett.

Atlanta Braves option Vaughn Grissom to Triple-A Gwinnett, recall Orlando Arcia

Although the Braves have the best record in the National League by a few games, it is only the first weekend in May. Atlanta has dealt with so many injuries already. When one player returns from IL, another seems to go on it instantaneously. While getting Arcia’s glove and clutch hitting back will be huge, you would be lying to yourself if you didn’t feel Grissom’s demotion sting a bit.

One advantage he has in going down now is he will be starting games a bit more regularly at short for the Stripers. This is because Shewmake will remain in Atlanta while infielder Ehire Adrianza works is way back from his injury. His stint on the big-league roster may be short-lived, but it is abundantly clear that Atlanta is no longer down with defensive liabilities at this major position.

I know that Grissom is putting in so much work to improve his glove, but you can’t have your starting shortstop on a championship-caliber team making an error every three nights. In as few games as he’s played, he’s already tied for second in the NL for the most errors committed at shortstop.

Eventually, you are going to face a team that is hotter than the freaking sun, who will capitalize on every defensive lapse you make. Baltimore is one of the better teams, so maybe this was a sign?

Getting Arcia back is a big boost to the roster, but it is a shame this Troublemaker was sent down.
