When is Week 0 for college football?
By Scott Rogust
The 2023 college football season officially begins with Week 0, serving as the opening weekend. Here is when Week 0 is scheduled.
It seemed like yesterday that the Georgia Bulldogs blew out the TCU Horned Frogs to win the College Football Playoff national championship for the second consecutive year. With that, the wait for the start of next season began. Since then, the 2022 NFL season concluded, the 2023 MLB campaign began, and the NBA and Stanley Cup playoffs took place. But, we are getting closer to the start to the 2023 college football season.
Fans are probably wondering what is the official start date for the campaign. Well, that would be Week 0.
Only a select number of games will take place that week before the remaining college football programs begin their respective seasons. Teams can receive certain exemptions to play in Week 0. For example, those who play on the road against Hawaii this season (and their opponents) have the option to start their season one week earlier.
So, when is the exact date to the opening weekend of the 2023 college football season?
When is Week 0 for college football?
Saturday, Aug. 26 will be the official date for Week 0. As for how many games there will be on that day, it will be seven. Let’s take a look at the full schedule for the day.
Week 0 schedule for 2023 season
- FIU at Louisiana Tech
- Hawaii at Vanderbilt
- Navy at Notre Dame (live from Dublin, Ireland)
- San Jose State at USC
- UMass at New Mexico State
- UTEP at Jacksonville State

There are some big programs that will be partaking in the opening weekend of the college football season. The annual meeting between the Notre Dame Fighting Irish will take place, this time in Dublin, Ireland. Both teams were actually supposed to play in Dublin back in 2020, but it was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Then there’s the USC Trojans, who nearly made it into the College Football Playoff last year behind a terrific season-long performance by quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams. They will look to being their season with a win over San Jose State.
There you have it, Week 0 will take place on Aug. 26 and will feature seven games.
