Colorado Rockies pitcher Ryan Feltner was struck in the back of a head by a line drive off the bat of Philadelphia’s Nick Castellanos in a frightening scene here at Coors Field on Saturday night.

With two outs in the second inning, Feltner delivered a 1-1 pitch to Castellanos, who sent the ball back through the mound at 92.7 mph.

The ball struck Feltner in the back of the head as he tried to turn away from it, dropping him to the ground as the crowd in Denver audibly gasped.

After lying on the ground for a few moments, Feltner sat up, then was helped to his feet and escorted from the field by members of the Colorado Rockies training staff.

Feltner, a 26-year-old right-hander making his eighth start of the season, gave up four runs on four hits and walked four in 1.2 innings. Castellanos, standing on first after the comebacker connected with Feltner, was visibly shaken as were both dugouts, with players standing on the top steps as the Coors Field crowd remained quiet.

After a delay following Feltner leaving the field, Rockies long reliever Peter Lambert took over, getting Kyle Schwarber to ground out to end the inning.

UPDATE: Feltner was taken to a local hospital where he is under observation and “undergoing a litany of exams and tests,” according to Rockies manager Bud Black. The team is expected to give an update on his condition on Sunday morning.
