Breaking down the PGA Championship cut rules for the 2023 tournament at Oak Hill to see how many players make the cut and how it compares to other majors.

The 2023 PGA Championship will be the second major on the calendar with the new schedule for major championships introduced in recent years and a loaded field, as you’d expect, is ready to take on what should be quite the challenge at Oak Hill Country Club this week.

Scottie Scheffler and Jon Rahm come in as the top-two players in golf right now and are the big-time favorites to win. At the same time, Justin Thomas is looking to go back-to-back at the PGA Championship, Rory McIlroy is trying to get back to winning majors, Brooks Koepka is aiming to renew his major championship dominance, Jordan Spieth is trying to complete the career grand slam by winning his first PGA Championship, while guys like Xander Schauffele, Patrick Cantlay, Viktor Hovland, and more are trying to win their first major.

Before all of that, though, these players have to see the weekend and make the PGA Championship cut. What exactly will that entail? Let’s take a look at the PGA Championship cut rules to see how many players will make it through to the third and final rounds at Oak Hill.

PGA Championship cut rules: How many players make the cut at Oak Hill?

The PGA Championship cut rules are that the Top 70 players plus ties after the first two rounds of play will move onto the weekend and the final two rounds. There is also no rule that any player within 10 strokes of the leader will make the cut, as has been the case in some majors. These are the rules that have been in place for several years, but also differ from a regular PGA Tour event and a few of the other major championships.

The Masters is perhaps the most different as the Top 50 players and ties make it through, which comes after they eliminated the 10-stroke rule a few years ago. For the US Open, it is the Top 60 players and ties on the leaderboard who make the cut. However, the PGA of America uses the same cut rules as The Open Championship. Meanwhile, a standard PGA Tour event has a cut line of Top 65 and ties.

What was the PGA Championship cut line in 2022, 2021 and 2020

Last year at Southern Hills, 79 players made the cut at +4 before Justin Thomas went on to win the 2022 PGA Championship. It was 81 players who made the cut the previous year at Kiawah with a +5 cut line as Phil Mickelson went on to win in 2021. En route to Collin Morikawa’s victory in the 2020 PGA, TPC Harding Park played a bit easier than other events, with a cut at +1, seeing 79 players make it to the weekend.
