Viktor Hovland is in contention in another major at the PGA Championship, leaving golf fans asking if he’s won a major, best finishes in majors, and more. 

There have been big expectations for Viktor Hovland from the moment he turned pro and joined the PGA Tour. He’s somewhat lived up to them with three PGA Tour wins before turning 25 years old. But his major championship resumé had been lacking. The 2023 PGA Championship was a sign that things are changing for the Norwegian in that capacity, however.

After going 5-under over the first two days and sitting one stroke off the lead, he stayed in that position with an even-par round on Saturday, putting him in the final pairing with Brooks Koepka entering Sunday at Oak Hill Country Club as they both looked to win the 2023 PGA Championship and hoist the Wanamaker Trophy.

With Hovland in contention, though, golf fans were asking if he had ever won a major championship and what his major record looked like.

Has Viktor Hovland won a major championship?

Coming into the 2023 PGA Championship, the 25-year-old Viktor Hovland has still not won a major championship. Having said that, the Norwegian has started knocking on the door and putting himself in the mix. Leading into the PGA at Oak Hill, Hovland registered Top 10 finishes in the previous two majors, The Open at St. Andrews at the end of the summer in 2022 and then The Masters earlier in 2023.

With that said, Hovland has proven he can win, notching three victories on the PGA Tour with a win at the Puerto Rico Open in 2020, a win at the Mayakoba Golf Classic in 2020, and then another win at Mayakoba for the 2021 World Wide Technology Championship. He’s also won twice on the European/DP World Tour as well, capturing titles at the 2021 BMW International Open and 2022 Slync.io Dubai Desert Classic, beating Richard Bland in a playoff.

Viktor Hovland major history: Best finish at every major championship

Even though Viktor Hovland doesn’t have a win at a major in his career, he’s started piecing together a nice major championship resumé overall. Let’s take a look at Hovland’s best finishes at every major championship leading into the 2023 PGA Championship.

  • Viktor Hovland best finish at PGA Championship: T2 (2023, Oak Hill)
  • Viktor Hovland best finish at US Open: T12 (2019, Pebble Beach – Low Amateur)
  • Viktor Hovland best finish at The Open Championship: T4 (2022, St. Andrews)

His two Top 10 finishes in the last two majors prior to Oak Hill were actually Hovland’s first Top 10 finishes at major championships in his young career. In fact, he’d only registered two Top 20 finishes as a professional prior to the British Open in 2022.

Suffice it to say, he’s figured out a formula to get into the mix during major weeks.
