3 Packers candidates to be cut going into the summer
Packers cut candidate No. 2: Parker White, K
With Green Bay making the decision to move on from longtime kicker Mason Crosby this offseason, it seemed like former South Carolina kicker Parker White might be finally getting the shot he’s been waiting for after the Packers signed him in January.
In the wake of the draft, though, that seems less certain.
The 2023 NFL Draft oddly featured a number of specialists getting selected and Brian Gutekunst was a part of that. Green Bay selected Anders Carlson out of Auburn in the sixth round, not even waiting until the final round of the draft to do so. Even though any GM will admit that drafting a kicker is a bit of a crap shoot, the fact that they took him in the sixth round tells you that the team is at least moderately high on Carlson.
Now, there is a valid argument to be made that White might actually be the better kicker between the two players. While Carlson was a solid cog for Auburn in converting the gimme extra points (98.3% over five seasons), he made only 71.8% of his career field goals while displaying limited range and struggling outside of 50 yards.
White, on the other hand, converted 98.7% of his extra points and 72.7% of his field goals in his career at South Carolina. He didn’t have the biggest leg in college but has shown a stronger leg in practice.
Despite that, the fact that the team drafted Carlson would indicate that White will be pushed out in favor of the newcomer.
