Ranking NFL coaches by hotness of their seat
By Nick Villano
7. Ron Rivera – Washington Commanders
Ron Rivera might be higher on a lot of lists, and that makes sense. The Washington Commanders’ head coach was hired in 2020. The former long-time Panthers head coach took this job just a month after he was fired. The Commanders were looking for stability at a time when the franchise was anything but. Since then, he’s had marginal results, going 22-27-1 in three years. He was 8-8-1 last season, his best in the Nation’s Capital.
Now, the Commanders are starting the season with Sam Howell under center. That’s definitely a choice. The Commanders have to show progress this year, or Rivera will find himself in a similar situation. When he was fired, new Panthers owner David Tippett said he wanted to take the franchise in a different direction. Now, the Commanders are looking at new owners in Josh Harris’ group.
Luckily for Rivera, Harris likes stability in his teams. He usually is patient and lets his front office make the decisions. He’s done that for the Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Devils. However, it looks like Washington’s front office is already looking at who comes next.
The Commanders hired former Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy to be the offensive coordinator. Now, the DC team has a coach in place if they decide to fire Rivera. Still, there are definitely other coaches who have a hotter seat than Rivera.
