MLB rumors: Phillies could be in trouble with the rotation
Philadelphia’s attempt to get back to the World Series could be derailed by a number of issues, including the team finding a fifth starter to solidify the rotation.
Entering play on Tuesday, Philadelphia’s starters are 21st among the 30 MLB teams with a 4.69 ERA, but seventh when it comes to FIP at 3.93. The numbers suggest that the rotation in Philly could be unlucky so far this season, but will the team’s luck improve at the trade deadline when it comes to starting pitching?
It either doesn’t seem likely or may come with a very high price tag, according to the thought pattern from Evan Macy of The Philly Voice. If Philadelphia is indeed looking for a fifth starter, Macy writes that there could be a shortage of pitchers available who could match that criteria for the Phillies with a number of teams either expected to chase a Wild Card berth or keep their pitchers in house and try to deal off position players instead.
Of course, the Phillies enter play on Tuesday with a 32-34 record and need to get back to their winning ways to secure exactly which trade deadline tactics the team will employ. If the team can get back over .500, can a fifth starter be something Philadelphia will chase and perhaps pay a hefty price to get? It’s something worth watching as the days tick down to August 1.
