Hockey Hall of Fame Election: Who is eligible and how to watch

The Hockey Hall of Fame will make its selection for the newest class of inductees soon.

The Hockey Hall of Fame’s 18-member Selection Committee will meet this week to vote on the Class of 2023. Here’s what you need to know.

Hockey Hall of Fame Election 2023: Who is eligible to be elected?

It’s important to note that the Hockey Hall of Fame isn’t restricted to NHL players. Several players have starred in Europe but never played in the NHL and are enshrined in Toronto. The 18-person Hall of Fame committee considers the entire playing career, including international play.

Suppose a player, architect (President, GM, coach), or referee has retired from hockey for three seasons. In that case, he’s potentially eligible for election every year until he eventually gets in.

Like other halls, you must receive a certain threshold of votes to qualify. In the Hockey Hall of Fame’s case, that number is 75%. A maximum of four male players, two female players, one referee, or two architects can be elected if no referees receive a vote.

To qualify for the 2023 ballot, goaltenders must’ve played at least 400 NHL regular season games, won over 200 NHL games, or recorded 25 or more NHL shutouts. It’s a change from other years, which stated a goaltender needed at least 500 NHL regular season games, along with over 250 wins and 50 shutouts.

Forwards and defensemen must’ve played at least 1,000 NHL regular season games or recorded a minimum of 300 goals, 400 assists, or 700 points.

It’s a drop from previous elections, which required forwards and defensemen to have recorded at least 400 NHL goals, 700 assists (500 for defencemen), 1,000 NHL points, or won at least six Stanley Cup titles, two Canada/World Cup titles, or are members of the “Triple Gold Club” (winners of the World Championship, Olympic Gold, and the Stanley Cup).

Additionally, female players who have either registered at least 50 points in IIHF Women’s World Championship play, been named tournament Most Valuable Player or received two-or-more Tournament Directorate Awards, and players who have either registered at least 100 points in Senior World Championship play or received two-or-more Tournament Directorate Awards. also get a chance at hockey immortality.

This year, defenseman Jay Bouwmeester, Ron Hainsey, Dan Hamhuis, forward Alexander Steen, Justin Williams, and goaltenders Corey Crawford, Jimmy Howard, and Henrik Lundqvist are all former NHL players making their first appearance on the ballot.

Female USA star Monique Lamoureux-Morando will also make her first appearance on the ballot.

The selection announcement will be live on Wednesday, June 21, at 3:00 pm ET.
