USMNT news: Pulisic to Lyon, McKennie to Roma, Gold Cup draw
Today’s USMNT news includes reports linking Christian Pulisic to Olympique Lyonnais and Weston McKennie to AS Roma. We also round up the Stars and Stripes’ draw with Jamaica in their opening game at the Gold Cup.
USMNT news: Christian Pulisic to Olympique Lyonnais
Christian Pulisic is expected to leave Chelsea this summer and his next destination was thought to be Serie A. However, there is now interest from Ligue 1 in the USMNT forward.
According to transfer expert Ekrem Konur, “Lyon is preparing to make an opening bid for Chelsea’s 24-year-old Christian Pulisic. AC Milan and Juventus are in talks with the London club to sign the United States winger.”
Lyon finished seventh in the French league last season, so will be without European soccer. However, they will be able to offer Pulisic regular game time in one of the top five leagues in Europe.
Juventus are expecting to complete the signing of fellow American Timothy Weah from Lille soon. Therefore, they may not need to sign Pulisic as well, as both players are predominantly wingers. AC Milan would be the most attractive option as they will be in the Champions League next season.
USMNT news: Weston McKennie to AS Roma
It could be one in, one out for USMNT players at Juventus. Timothy Weah looks set to join the club but Weston McKennie could be on his way out.
GOAL has reported that “Roma are interested in signing Weston McKennie from Juventus this summer, as Jose Mourinho seeks a ‘dynamic midfielder’ in this transfer window.”
Roma got to the final of the Europa League last season and will continue in the competition in the next campaign as they finished sixth in Serie A. It would give McKennie the opportunity to stay in Italy and work under one of the World’s most renowned coaches, Mourinho.
USMNT news: Gold Cup draw
The USMNT’s opening game at the Gold Cup ended in a 1-1 draw with Jamaica. In fact, the Stars and Stripes were fortunate to take a point as they needed Brandon Vazquez to equalise in the 88th minute.
Damion Lowe gave the Reggae Boyz the lead with a header and it could have got worse for the USMNT. However, Leon Bailey saw his penalty saved by Matt Turner.
The USMNT missed a load of great chances but finally drew level when Vazquez came off the bench to equalize. Next up for B.J. Callaghan’s side is Saint Kitts and Nevis next Wednesday.
